City of York-Bureau of Health

The mission of the City of York-Bureau of Health is to prevent disease and to promote and protect the health of York City residents through the assessment of needs, the assurance of public health services and the provision of sound public health policies through dynamic and committed leadership.

Increasing physical activity is a major part of the Safe & Health Communities program, funded by the Pa. Department of Health's Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant. The program focus areas include Complete Street policies, promoting safe and accessible active transportation options, injury prevention, pedestrian/bicycle safety and healthy food access. By improving the built environment and providing safe, designated walking routes, the Bureau of Health is encouraging physical activity and increasing food access in the community. Through various health promotion strategies, the Bureau of Health supports employee wellness through partnerships with City businesses and organizations. Walking challenges are a major part of the employee wellness movement as well as establishing long-term walking groups.
