Education

Recognizing the critical role health care providers play in curbing the overdose epidemic, the Department of Health has created education and tools to assist providers in navigating the complexities of the overdose epidemic.  The Department offers free online and on-site education on topics including safe and effective opioid prescribing, strategies to identify substance use disorder, addressing substance use disorder, and referring patients to treatment. Participants are eligible to receive Continuing Education (CE) and certain modules meet additional Pennsylvania licensing and relicensing requirements.

Now Seeking Feedback! Education Needs Assessment Survey for Providers

The Pennsylvania Department of Health's Office of Drug Surveillance and Misuse Prevention (ODSMP) is seeking input from healthcare providers via the following needs assessment survey: pi.tt/ProviderNeedsAssessment.

This survey will be open through Sunday, April 7, 2024.

The University of Pittsburgh Program Evaluation and Research Unit (PERU) has been contracted by the Department's ODSMP to conduct a needs assessment survey to identify gaps in healthcare provider education topics such as opioid and stimulant prescribing, treating patients with pain, and linkage to care for patients with substance use disorder.

Results from this survey will be used to inform a new statewide training curriculum that will be available to healthcare providers and their teams at no cost in late 2024. This education is intended to support providers concerning the topics described above and will be based on the CDC's 2022 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids. This curriculum will replace PA DOH's existing “Evidence-Based Prescribing: Tools you can use to fight the opioid epidemic" curriculum that is available to providers in Pennsylvania through live and virtual educational sessions conducted by Quality Insights, or on TRAIN PA.

ODSMP thanks healthcare providers for their participation in this survey as this feedback will inform future educational initiatives.
