Underlying Cause of Death

Select the cause(s) of death for which to show statistics.

Multiple values may be selected (you may need to hold down the Shift or Ctrl key). However, this menu will be limited to a single selection when creating a map.

The underlying cause of death (also referred to as the primary cause of death) is the disease or injury that initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or it is the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury.

Click on the ICD Codes button for the specific ICD-10 and ICD-9 codes by cause.

Values which are followed by (M) or (F) are male- or female-specific causes of death, respectively. Only data for that sex will be included in the output. For example, if Cancer of prostate (M) is selected in the Underlying Cause of Death menu, the output table will contain rows for prostate cancer deaths among males, but not among females or the total population.
