State Health Assessment


The Pennsylvania State Health Assessment (SHA) 2016 Update provides updated statistical information relevant to the State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) and the Health Innovation in Pennsylvania (HIP) priorities.

(Published December 2016) 

A SHA update work group, consisting of partners from the Department of Health and other stakeholders, identified components from the 2013 SHA sections ‘Major Risk and Protective Factors’ and ‘Health Care Services’ to update in support of measuring SHIP objectives as well as HIP priorities.


The SHA Update 2016 is a resource for SHIP task forces, all members of the public health system and the general population to use for collaborations and priority setting, planning, program development, funding applications and coordination of resources.

The purpose of the Pennsylvania State Health Assessment (SHA) is to assess and report on the health status of the population in Pennsylvania. 

SHA reports on the:

  • Health status of Pennsylvania's population.
  • Factors that contribute to health issues.
  • Resources that can be mobilized to address population health improvement.

Context of Health (PDF) - The state and its people (population demographics), health insurance, and emergency preparedness

Infectious Diseases (PDF) - Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hospital-related health care associated infections, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, rabies, legionellosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, enterohemorrhagic escherichia coli, and vaccine preventable diseases
