Hepatitis C: The Silent Epidemic
Save the date erie .JPGThe Pennsylvania Department of Health is hosting a series of one day educational seminars to discuss the increasing rates of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among young adults in Pennsylvania. Led by the state’s viral hepatitis prevention coordinator, these seminars serve as an excellent opportunity to 1) network with other public health workers, medical providers and advocates for vulnerable populations, and 2) discuss the current issues in hepatitis C screening, treatment, prevention and care. Our speakers are experts from the state and across the nation and have included Pa. Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Gary Tennis, U.S. Attorney David Hickton, and the Pa. Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine.
 Topics have included:
  • State of HCV in Pennsylvania and review of increasing incidence of persons <30 years old
  • Hepatitis C prevention opportunities among people who inject drugs: confronting the growing    epidemic
  • Challenges and successes in linkage-to-care
  • Hepatitis C policy landscape - a national, state and local review
  • Basic HCV drug talk that includes indications, contraindicatoins and drug choice based on genotype
  • Pipeline drugs and pending therapies
  • Hepatitis/HIV co-infection
  • How to counsel those who cannot get treatment
  • Addressing HCV disparities and stigma (specifically among infection drug users, men who have sex with men and incarcerated persons)
  • Overcoming psychiatric barriers to effective hepatitis C treatment
  • CLIA lab exclusion/discussion of reflex testing
  • HCV rapid antibody testing course and certification
